If you are thinking about joining a cricket club in Bristol, one of the first questions is usually: how much is it going to cost me? The answer varies a lot depending on which club you join. We looked at the publicly available membership fees across Bristol to help you compare.
What Do Bristol Cricket Clubs Actually Charge?
Most cricket clubs in Bristol don't publish their fees online, which makes comparing options difficult. Of the clubs we checked, here is what we found:
| Club | Annual Membership | Match Fee | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stoke Gifford CC | £20 | £5 | North Bristol (Stoke Gifford) |
| Knowle CC | £110 | Not listed | South Bristol (Knowle) |
| Golden Hill CC | £125 | £10 (£6 concessions) | North Bristol (Henleaze) |
Several other Bristol clubs — Bristol CC, Bedminster CC, Coalpit Heath CC, Old Bristolians Westbury CC, and Bishopston CC — do not publicly list their fees. We'd encourage you to contact them directly for current pricing.
The national picture gives some useful context. According to Gray-Nicolls, weekly match fees in UK adult cricket typically range from £8 to £15 per game. Senior Saturday league players in metropolitan areas pay between £120 and £220 per season for membership alone.
At £20 per year, Stoke Gifford CC is 82% cheaper than the next cheapest Bristol club we could find.
What Does That Actually Cost Over a Season?
Let's say you play 15 matches in a season — roughly what a regular Saturday player would manage between April and September. Here is what that costs at each club:
| Club | Membership | Match Fees (15 games) | Season Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stoke Gifford CC | £20 | £75 | £95 |
| Knowle CC | £110 | ~£150 (est.) | ~£260 |
| Golden Hill CC | £125 | £150 | £275 |
| National average | ~£170 | ~£180 | ~£350 |
Playing a full season at Stoke Gifford CC costs less than a single month's gym membership. You would save £180 per year compared to Golden Hill and £165 compared to Knowle — and that's before you factor in the cost of equipment, which we lend for free.
Why Is Stoke Gifford CC So Cheap?
Fair question. We are not cutting corners — we just keep things simple.
We don't have a professional groundsman or a multi-million pound facility. We have a proper cricket ground at North Road in Stoke Gifford, a committed group of volunteers who maintain it, and a clubhouse where everyone is welcome. We keep overheads low so that the cost of playing cricket stays low.
Our philosophy is straightforward: cricket should be affordable for everyone. A £20 annual fee and a £5 match fee means nobody is priced out. You don't need to be earning a fortune to play sport. That matters to us.
What Do You Get for £20?
More than you might expect:
- Full playing membership — you can play in any of our teams, any week
- Saturday league cricket — 1st XI in the Bristol & District Senior League, Eighth Division North
- Midweek evening cricket — relaxed T20 games on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings
- Training every Thursday — open net sessions at 6pm during the season, free of charge
- Club equipment — bats, pads, gloves, and helmets available to borrow at no extra cost
- Social events — annual dinner, quiz nights, barbecues, end-of-season celebrations
There is also a non-playing social membership for £5 per year if you want to support the club without playing.
What About Hidden Costs?
There aren't any. The £20 membership and £5 match fee are genuinely all you pay. Training is free. Equipment is available to borrow. There is no joining fee, no kit levy, no minimum commitment.
Some clubs charge extra for things like kit, ground levies, or end-of-season subscriptions. We don't. What you see is what you pay.
Is Cheap the Same as Low Quality?
No. We play competitive league cricket in the Bristol & District Senior League. We train every week. We have been part of Bristol cricket since 1930. The standard of cricket is proper — we just don't charge a premium for it.
The ECB's Impact of Cricket Report found that 92% of players felt they became part of their community through cricket. That sense of community doesn't cost extra at Stoke Gifford — it comes included with the £20.
How Do I Join?
