Common Questions
Everything you need to know about joining
No problem at all — we genuinely welcome complete beginners and have a long track record of turning first-timers into confident cricketers. No experience is needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go. Come along to a Thursday evening training session at our North Road ground in Stoke Gifford to meet the team and see if you enjoy it. Sessions are relaxed and informal: you will get a chance to bat in the nets, have a bowl, and do some fielding practice. Nobody is assessing you or taking notes. Several of our current regular players had never held a cricket bat before joining us, and they were playing matches within a few weeks. There is absolutely no pressure to commit straight away — try a couple of sessions and see how you feel. Equipment is provided, so all you need is trainers and comfortable clothing.
Absolutely — returning players are a huge part of our club and you would be in very good company. Many of our members came back to cricket after 10, 15, even 20 years away and found it just as enjoyable as they remembered. The muscle memory returns surprisingly quickly, and the fitness builds naturally over the course of a season. We play in the Eighth Division North of the Bristol & District Senior League, which is competitive enough to be meaningful but relaxed enough that you will not feel out of your depth while you shake off the rust. If Saturdays do not suit, the Midweek XI plays friendly T20 games on weekday evenings in a low-pressure environment. Come to a Thursday training session first to ease yourself back in — there is no expectation to be match-fit from day one.
Not at all — the club has bats, pads, gloves, and helmets that you are welcome to borrow for as long as you need. Many of our players used club equipment for their entire first season before deciding what to buy for themselves. When you do start building your own kit, your teammates will happily recommend what is worth spending money on and what is not. For training sessions, all you really need is a pair of trainers and comfortable clothing you can move in. For matches, cricket whites are traditional but we can lend you a pair to start with. The only thing we ask you to bring is a water bottle and a positive attitude. Cricket should be accessible to everyone, and we never want the cost of equipment to be a barrier to playing.
During the cricket season (late April to early September), training takes place every Thursday evening from 6pm at our North Road ground in Stoke Gifford, Bristol BS34 8PE. Sessions typically last about two hours and include batting in the nets, bowling practice, and fielding drills in a relaxed, open format. Pre-season nets run on Sunday mornings from early March through to April at a local indoor facility, giving players a chance to shake off the winter rust before the season starts. All sessions are open to everyone — existing members, new joiners, and people who just want to try cricket for the first time with no commitment. Check our training page for the latest schedule, including any changes due to weather or venue availability. The ground is just minutes from Bristol Parkway station and the A4174 ring road.
Our 1st XI plays 40-over league cricket every Saturday from late April to early September in the Bristol & District Senior League. Home matches are at our North Road ground, and away games take you to clubs across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Saturday games typically start around 1pm and finish by early evening, with a tea interval in the middle. The Midweek XI plays shorter-format friendly T20 games on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during the summer — a more relaxed option that is perfect if weekends do not work for you or you prefer a less time-intensive game. There is no obligation to play every week; you tell us when you are available and we pick from those who are free. Most players aim for a mix of Saturday and midweek cricket depending on their schedule.
The easiest way is to fill in the enquiry form at the bottom of this page and someone from the club will get back to you within a day or two to answer any questions and invite you along. Alternatively, you can simply turn up to a Thursday evening training session at 6pm at our North Road ground — no booking needed, just come to the gate and introduce yourself. We encourage everyone to come to a couple of sessions before formally signing up, so you can make sure the club is the right fit for you. When you are ready to join, membership is just £20 for the entire year, payable online or in person. There is no joining fee, no minimum commitment, and no hidden costs. We want the process to be as simple and welcoming as possible.
Yes — at £20 per year for full playing membership and a £5 match fee per game, Stoke Gifford CC is the most affordable cricket club in Bristol by a significant margin. For comparison, most Bristol clubs charge between £50 and £150 for annual membership alone, with some of the larger clubs going even higher. Match fees at other clubs can range from £5 to £15 per game. Over a typical season of 15 to 20 matches, the total cost at Stoke Gifford comes to around £95 to £120, compared with £125 to £300 or more elsewhere. We deliberately keep our fees low because we believe cricket should be accessible to everyone, regardless of income. There are no hidden charges for training sessions, teas, or social events.
There are over 15 cricket clubs across Bristol and the surrounding areas, ranging from large multi-team clubs with six or more sides to smaller community-focused clubs like ours. Well-known clubs include Bristol CC, Frenchay CC, Stapleton CC, Winterbourne CC, Hambrook CC, Patchway CC, and Thornbury CC, among others. Each has its own character and level of competitiveness.
